Human Trafficking (HT) is the illegal movement of victims for the purpose of exploitation. In Modern Day Slavery (MDS), people who have been trafficked are held against their will and forced to work. This is often manual labour or sexual exploitation. They are two separate crimes and are similar but distinct.
How does it happen?
Sometimes people are coerced into travelling, sometimes they are tricked to go under their own free will - for instance with the promise of a job or accommodation at the other end. Once at the destination however, their passports and documents are taken away and they are forced to work.
How are people trapped?
Traffickers often tell victims that they have to work in order to pay them back for transport tickets, accommodation or other costs and use threats (such as harming the rest of their family) and violence to control them. Under this guise, amazingly a number of victims do not even realise what is going on. But this is Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery.
Right now
It is not hard to see the opportunity available to Traffickers in the current situation; with millions of people in need of shelter and money. And the Traffickers are absolutely currently at work. We know that they are patrolling the borders and targeting the most vulnerable. Most people are unaware of the risk of being trafficked and put into slavery and in their desperate need, make easy pickings. The scale of this situation is currently being under-reported.
Problems
Shockingly, the United Kingdom is the only European country which currently recognise Modern Day Slavery as an offence making successful convictions excessively hard. Human Trafficking is better recognised but due to large-scale lack of understanding, resources and sometimes corruption within law enforcement agencies, implementation of existing laws is often vanishingly poor.
Raising awareness of the risk is pivotal to prevention. Every Bucket of Love which is distributed will contain essential information, in Ukrainian, explaining what HT & MDS is, what warning signs to look for and critically, a list of suitable helpline numbers to call should someone find themselves trafficked or suspect a situation.
These leaflets have kindly been compiled for the purpose by leading anti HT & MDS organisation Justice & Care.
Justice & Care works internationally to rescue and support victims, train front line professionals and bring criminal gangs to account. For more information about their invaluable work please see their website.
They are currently on the ground and are also implementing awareness campaigns along the borders.
There are a number of committed anti HT & MDS charities such as:
And some aid organisations such as the British Red Cross have programmes to support victims.
These are just a few. As with all organisations, some are more effective than others but it is unequivocal that all efforts to raise awareness and prevent this most diabolical of crimes, should be encouraged.
Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery is the fastest growing criminal industry in the world, generating an estimated £113 billion per year. No effort should be spared to protect and rescue its victims and bring its perpetrators to account.
Many people are unaware that Human Trafficking and Modern Day Slavery happens here in the UK - indeed the problem is rife and rising. Using the refugee crisis as a veil, we can only expect to see the problem snowball. It is important that there is common awareness of the risk and signs.
